Project description

Our vision and business idea
Our vision is to develop aluminium surfaces with exciting new properties. Besides the proof-of-concept in a specific sensor application our project shall represent a new technology platform opening up for different applications across a very wide range of industrial segments like food packaging, medico and healt care utilities a.o.
The sensor unit - our proof of concept
Measuring the degree of contamination in compressed air plays a cru cial role in the industry. Sensors can, by early warning, save both time and money in the production, if they are reliable. This again depends on the degree of self contamination inside the sensor (bacterial growth, oil drops, aerosoles
and other contaminants). In AMAS we´re dealing with a compressed air sensor developed by PAJ Systemteknik A/S, which has an aluminium chamber inside. We are committed to research and development of an anti microbial aluminium surface on the interior of the chamber. That is: we want to prevent self-contamination during operation, ensuring a novel self-calibrating and self-cleaning sensor system, which does not exist on the market today. We expect to reach a sensitivity level of 5 mg/m3. This unique level implies long-term stability/reliability because of the self-cleaning effect. There is a huge market potential for the sensor in Europe. The sensor system is covering the compressed air industries´ most significant regulation, ISO 8573.
The tasks
The key word is: TiO2, which has an ability to kill bacterias when exposed to light. We know how to deposit the compound on a metal substrate, but we want to tailor a TiO2 coating on aluminium for this specific sensor application. The Tribologicenter at Teknologisk Institut will be in charge of the coating part. Once we have some testsurfaces the anti microbial effect will be investigated and confirmed by our partners IPU Produktudvikling and Center for Systemers Mikrobiologi, Danmarks Tekniske Universitet. The next step will be to convert R&D results into large scale fabrication. This will be lead by Institut for Mekanisk Teknologi, Danmarks Tekniske Universitet, who also has advanced facilites for the characterization of the surfaces. Dissemination of the AMAS project, news and articles is lead by AluCluster. Please note that the R&D areas are highly interactive.
The technology
Our coating technology is based on the HiPIMS technology which is a means of physical vapour deposition e.g. on a metal like aluminium. The superscript picture of our site shows an electron microscope picture of the result of a HiPIMS process: A TiO2 layer deposited on a metal substrate.
